     Boca Raton attorney Peter Sachs, managing partner of Sachs Sax Caplan has been reappointed to the Treasure Coast Regional Planning Council for a term ending Oct. 1, 2016 by Governor Rick Scott and Business Development Board of Palm Beach County president and chief executive officer Kelly Smallridge was appointed by Scott to a vacant seat term ending Oct. 1, 2015. Both are subject to confirmation by the Florida Senate.

     Boca Raton based Office Depot had second quarter losses of $190 million and announced an $80 million settlement with California on an over-billing charge law suit. This column previously posted it would close 165 stores this year and a total of 4000 through 2016. Office Depot currently employs 1700 people at its Boca Raton headquarters and will add more with its merger with Office Max. The company could receive up to $5 million in new economic incentives from Florida and local governments — on top of millions of dollars granted years earlier — for keeping its headquarters and jobs in Boca Raton.

    

     Ongoing construction on the new Interstate 95 interchange at Spanish River Boulevard in Boca Raton is affecting both car and pedestrian traffic. Nightly lane closures are planned on northbound and southbound I-95 between Glades and Yamato roads until Sept. 7. The outside lanes will be closed 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. Sunday through Friday.

    Sparked by a demand for new housing, Palm Beach County added nearly 3,000 construction jobs in June, up 15% from June of last year. G. L. homes led the building upswing with two 300 home developments west of Delray and Boynton Beach. Ranger construction has 200 people working on 30 developments in South Florida, but builders have become concerned about finding skilled labor for projects looming on the horizon.

     An independent analysis by Florida’s Tax Watch revealed the number of Florida’s visitors increased 2.8 million last year, adding 38,000 tourism related new jobs, 15,000 in South Florida. Tourism in Florida reached 94 million last year and estimated to reach 100 million by the end of 2018. The boost in visitors reflected adding 37,000 non-tourism related jobs.

    Despite all the recalls hammering the industry, AutoNation had the best July sales month in eight years, selling over 27,000 new cars and trucks, up 8% from a year ago. Leading the sales were luxury cars, Lexus, BMW and Mercedes, that were up a solid 17% from last year. South Florida’s 31 stores jumped 12% from 2013. AutoNation has 260 stores selling 35 different brands.

     The Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare, may not be so affordable next year, according to the state insurance commissioner. South Florida Enrollees face a 15% hike in premiums and higher deductibles in 2015. In addition, the Obamacare website, healthcare.gov is still not working right and causing widespread confusion when the Feds attempt qualify enrollees for subsidies that will pay partial premiums.

     Officials at state-owned Citizens Property Insurance are being lambasted for excessive travel expenses of $1.3 million in 8 months to Bermuda, London, Zurich and other European destinations, including a $633 per night stay in Bermuda for one Citizens official.

     Forbes Magazine reported that the Miami Dolphins franchise is valued at a little over $1 billion, the same amount owner Steve Ross paid for it five years ago. Miami Marlins baseball owner Jeff Luria is making a killing on his team. He paid $138 million and now Forbes says it is worth $500 million. The Miami Heat is valued at $770 million and the Florida Panthers is worth $240 million, according to Forbes.

      Publix has 251 stores in South Florida, employing nearly 24,000 people and made $1.6 billion in profits last year and $404 million for the second quarter of this year, with same store sales up 6%, on its way to make $1.8 billion on sales of $28 billion this year. The company is also creating a higher profile in real estate by acquiring property in shopping centers where its stores are anchored.

   Palm Beach county tourism officials are following Broward County with a major push for gay tourism. Last year tourism grew by 22% with an average salary of $43,000 in the tourism industry.

     With three-year contracts up on Sept. 30, Boca officials are conducting collective bargaining sessions with police and firefighters' unions with both unions optimistic they'll reach agreements with the city in time to have new contracts in place.

    Legalizing Medical Marijuana is the program at the goldcoasttigerbayclub.com lunch 11:30 a.m. August 12, featuring Ben Pollara, Campaign Manager at United for Care, the main organization advocating for the approval of Amendment 2 in November. RSVP on the site. A recent Quinnipiac poll revealed a vast majority of Floridians (88%), support legalizing medical marijuana.

  

       Additional information about the retail project being built as the southeast corner of Glades and 441 just west of Wells Fargo is that a European Spa and mattress store will be joining the two restaurants planned with a projected opening in December.

      Boca’s Dog Beach trial program has been a huge success and a $36,000 moneymaker for the city and will continue. 1201 residents at $30, but only 7 non-residents at $165 bought permits (as non- residency rates are outrageous).

      Boca based ADT Chief Executive Naren Gursahaney was appointed to the board of directors of NextEra Energy, the parent of Florida Power & Light.

     Zumiez, an urban skate store, selling urban apparel, hats, skate shoes, skating supplies, skateboards and long boards, is now open in front of the Container store next to Sears at the Town Center Mall, 600 Glades Road.

     Numbers just released showed the results of an online questionnaire of 14,000 people rating companies with the worst customer service, that nine out of the top 10 were operating in South Florida. Leading the pack was AT&T, followed by Comcast, Bank of America, American Airlines, Citibank, Best Buy, Walmart and Time Warner Cable.

      There are 460,000 acres, 36% of land, devoted to agriculture in Palm Beach County and the state has 9 million acres.
